The University of Melbourne (Melbourne University) is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1853, it is Australia’s second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria. Its main campus is located in Parkville, an inner suburb north of Melbourne’s central business district, with several other campuses located across Victoria.
Incorporated in the 19th century by the colony of Victoria, Melbourne University is one of Australia’s six sandstone universities and a member of the Group of Eight, Universitas 21, Washington University’s McDonnell International Scholars Academy, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities.

The Parkville campus is the primary campus of the university, which was founded in 1853, and is located just north of Melbourne’s central business district. Parkville campus has cafes, gyms, 12 libraries, specialty stores, a small supermarket, and a seasonal farmers market. The campus is located within a broader renowned knowledge precinct, which encompasses eight hospitals, and many other leading research institutes.

ADMISSION & REQUIREMENTS:
Whether a student is applying as a domestic or international student, understanding the criteria for admission is essential. Be it an international student or domestic student, there is a common process to apply to Melbourne University, and that is, directly applying to the university’s website through their undergraduate app form.
Melbourne University has two admission intakes: February and July. Students are allowed to apply for an undergraduate degree once they have completed grade XII. Unlike other geographies, Australia only allows the students to apply once they have secured their final class XII board results before (prior to submitting their application).

The requirements for the undergraduate degree at Melbourne University are very straightforward. Students are required to submit their academic records, personal details, choice of course, English language proficiency proof, and a personal statement. For the students applying to competitive courses like the STEM, the Advanced Placement (AP) tests are not mandatory but can provide an advantage in the admission process.
A student must achieve a band of at least 6.5 in IELTS, and a score above 79+ in TOEFL (internet-based) is acceptable. Melbourne University doesn’t accept the revised TOEFL paper-delivered test. Personal Statement is another crucial aspect of admission in Melbourne University, as it covers information about academic & non-academic activities, projects, leadership work, etc. Letters of Recommendation (LOR) aren’t required for undergraduate admission, but can be asked to submit one LOR, if need be, based on the chosen subject.
Melbourne University does not ask for any extra-curricular activities, but these may be considered a plus on the application. So, it is important for students to participate in relevant activities linked to their area of study. These experiences are extremely valuable while writing a statement of purpose and sometimes optional essay questions (students will be informed about it in the form).

At Melbourne University, there are two ways to get admitted to the Doctor of Medicine degree course. Please note, that this is a master’s degree, and the university does not offer an undergraduate course in the field of medicine:
1. MD Standard Pathway – Domestic & International Students
In order to be considered for entry via the standard pathway, applicants:
Must have completed:-An undergraduate degree in any discipline, with studies to have been completed within 10 years of 1 January in the year in which the applicant intends to commence the Doctor of Medicine; or-For applicants whose most recently completed undergraduate degree was completed 10 or more years before 1 January of the year in which the applicant intends to commence the Doctor of Medicine, a Graduate Diploma, Master or PhD degree or equivalent completed within 10 years before 1 January of the year in which the applicant intends to commence the Doctor of Medicine; and;
Must have completed:-the Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admission Test (GAMSAT); or-for international students who are located overseas only, either the GAMSAT or the North American Medical Colleges Admission Test (MCAT); and
Perform satisfactorily at a Multi-Mini Interview
2. MD Guaranteed Entry Pathway – Domestic & International Students
This pathway is available to applicants who are:
Chancellor’s Scholars (current University of Melbourne students or University of Melbourne students who completed their course the previous year, who entered their undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne with an ATAR of 99.90 or above); or
Guaranteed Full Fee Entry (current University of Melbourne students who entered their undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne with an ATAR of 99.00 or above).
Guaranteed Entry Pathway applicants are required to perform satisfactorily at a Multi-Mini Interview. Students who fail to achieve a satisfactory performance will not be eligible for guaranteed entry into the course. Full-Fee Guaranteed Entry applicants must also meet a course Weighted Average Mark of 75 or above.
Guaranteed Entry Pathway applicants are NOT required to apply via the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) nor sit the Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT).
EVALUATION & EXPENSES:
For the international students acquiring the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or selection rank is not a prerequisite, unless a student is from IB Board. It is a selection mechanism that measures a student’s overall academic performance and achievements in relation to that of other applicants. But the international students are evaluated based on their grade XII final marks, a compelling statement of purpose, IELTS/TOEFL score, and any additional information the student may have provided like extracurricular activities, AP test results, etc. to increase their chances of admission.
International students need to pay a non-refundable application processing fee of A$100 (application form). The fee covers all applications made within one year (two semesters or four research periods). Melbourne University has an average of A$31K to 34K tuition fee per annum. The living cost is around A$22K to 24K. Students are also required to attain the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as a Visa necessity, which costs approximately A$305 per year.
After the student has accepted admission to the university, they will receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) that will make the student eligible to study a course in Australia and apply for the student visa. Proof of funds, health cover/insurance (OSHC) and the online CoE code helps students to apply for visas easily – an important part of the Australian student visa process.
